Peoria, IL – A Peoria man was taken into custody Wednesday morning after police responded to multiple Shot Spotter alerts on the city’s south side.

According to the Peoria Police Department, officers were dispatched around 8:57 a.m. to the 700 block of North Shipman Avenue after three separate alerts indicated gunfire. The first alert reported nine rounds fired, followed by six and then two more rounds within 40 seconds of each other.

When officers arrived, they did not locate any shooting victims. Police say officers searching the area encountered a man who allegedly matched the description of one of the shooters. The suspect, identified as 55-year-old William E. Drummond, was taken into custody in the 700 block of West Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and transported to the Peoria Police Department for further investigation.

Authorities allege that while retracing Drummond’s flight path, officers, with the help of a K9, recovered a discarded firearm. Drummond was arrested for unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Police confirmed a second suspect was not located and remains at large. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are urging anyone with information to contact the Peoria Police Department at (309) 673-4521. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through tip411 or by calling Crime Stoppers at (309) 673-9000.

Police noted that all suspects and arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
