Meadville, PA – The National Weather Service in Cleveland has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Crawford County, Pennsylvania, warning that heavy lake effect snow and strong winds could make Thanksgiving travel hazardous.
The watch remains in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday evening, with snow accumulations over 8 inches possible and wind gusts up to 45 mph. Forecasters caution that whiteout conditions could develop at times, especially on Thursday morning and early afternoon, when snowfall rates may exceed one inch per hour.
According to the National Weather Service, visibility may drop below one-quarter mile in heavier snowbands. The combination of strong winds and heavy, wet snow could lead to downed tree limbs, power outages, and slick roads, particularly across bridges and overpasses.
Travel may become difficult to dangerous, especially along U.S. Route 6, I-79, and local secondary roads. Officials are urging residents to delay unnecessary travel and keep a winter safety kit in their vehicles if travel is unavoidable.
The lake effect snow is expected to develop early Thursday and continue through Friday, shifting inland as winds strengthen behind a cold front. The worst conditions are expected Thursday morning through Thursday evening, coinciding with peak holiday traffic.
Meteorologists emphasize that lake effect snow can vary dramatically over short distances, meaning some communities could see a foot of snow while others nearby receive far less.
