Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A windy and sharply colder day is unfolding across eastern Pennsylvania, with strong wind gusts creating hazardous conditions and unseasonably low temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly, west winds with gusts of 40 to 45 mph are expected across much of the region today, with isolated gusts approaching 50 mph possible, especially in higher elevations and more exposed areas. The strongest winds are expected from mid-morning through early afternoon before gradually diminishing later in the day.

Forecasters warn that the combination of strong winds and cold air may result in downed tree limbs and isolated power outages, particularly where soils remain soft. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects such as trash cans, holiday decorations, and lightweight furniture.

Temperatures will remain well below seasonal averages, with highs staying below freezing north of Interstate 78, including areas near Allentown, Reading, and Scranton. Farther south, including the Philadelphia metro area, highs are expected to reach only the low to mid-30s.

Skies will remain mostly cloudy through the morning, with the National Weather Service noting that a few light snow showers are possible early in the day, particularly across northern Pennsylvania and adjacent areas. Skies are expected to gradually clear later this afternoon as winds weaken.

Wind chill values will make conditions feel even colder, especially during peak wind periods. Motorists operating high-profile vehicles should exercise caution on east-west roadways, bridges, and elevated highways, where sudden crosswinds may be strongest.

Conditions are expected to improve by evening as winds subside, though cold temperatures will persist into tonight. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by monitoring updates from the National Weather Service and to use caution when traveling or spending time outdoors.
