Raleigh, North Carolina – Mild conditions will give way to a chilly but dry New Year’s Eve across central North Carolina, with temperatures steadily falling into the 30s by midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, temperatures across the region will drop from the mid to upper 40s during the early evening into the mid-30s by midnight, under partly cloudy skies. No precipitation is expected, and winds are forecast to remain light, creating generally favorable conditions for outdoor celebrations.

Forecast data shows evening temperatures around 48 degrees in Raleigh and Chapel Hill, 46 degrees in Greensboro, and 49 degrees in Fayetteville early in the night. By midnight, temperatures are expected to settle near 37 degrees in Raleigh, 36 degrees in Durham and Chapel Hill, and 38 degrees in Fayetteville.

Wind speeds are expected to stay below 10 mph throughout the evening, limiting wind chill impacts. While conditions will feel cool, forecasters say temperatures will remain close to normal for late December in central North Carolina.

The National Weather Service notes that the dry weather pattern will continue into New Year’s Day, with highs Thursday expected to range from the upper teens to lower 20s during the morning before gradually warming later in the day. Overnight lows early Thursday morning will remain chilly but manageable with proper cold-weather clothing.

Public safety officials encourage residents attending outdoor events, fireworks displays, or midnight celebrations to dress in layers, especially after sunset when temperatures fall more quickly. Drivers should not expect weather-related travel issues, as roads are forecast to remain dry.

Overall, forecasters describe New Year’s Eve conditions as quiet and cooperative, with cold temperatures being the primary concern. Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts at weather.gov/rah for any last-minute changes.
