State College, PA – Residents of Central Pennsylvania should prepare for a wet and potentially hazardous day, as thunderstorms are expected to develop by afternoon, bringing heavy rain and flooding risks through tonight. The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook, with the greatest threat to areas east of Interstate 81, including State College and surrounding regions.

According to the NWS, locally heavy downpours could cause isolated flooding problems, especially along low-lying areas and roadways. The rain is expected to begin after 2 p.m. today, with an 80% chance of precipitation throughout the evening. Drivers in State College and nearby towns are advised to avoid non-essential travel, as heavy rain and thunder could lead to slick roads and reduced visibility. As of 4 a.m. today, current conditions at the State College Regional Airport show temperatures around 55°F with calm winds, but that will soon change as storms move in.

Looking ahead, Friday brings a 60% chance of more rain and thunderstorms, continuing into Friday night. While this period won’t be as intense, scattered showers and thunder are expected. Residents should keep umbrellas handy through the evening, with temperatures forecast to hover around 59°F during the day.

For the weekend, however, the forecast is much more favorable. Expect mostly sunny skies and highs near 70°F on Saturday, which will carry through Sunday—just in time for Mother’s Day. It’s a great time to enjoy outdoor activities or make plans for gatherings.

The National Weather Service has also provided a five-day forecast, showing dry conditions returning for Saturday through Sunday, with temperatures in the mid-70s. No significant weather-related threats are expected through next week, making for a clear and comfortable Mother’s Day weekend.
