Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Drivers and outdoor workers across western Pennsylvania should brace for thick haze and near-90°F heat Thursday, with the worst conditions expected after 2 p.m. in the Pittsburgh metro. Health officials urge residents—especially those with asthma or heart conditions—to limit outdoor exposure and stay hydrated.

According to the National Weather Service in Moon Township, widespread haze will settle over the region most of the day Thursday, with highs reaching 88°F by mid-afternoon. Calm winds and stagnant air will likely trap pollutants near the surface, causing elevated particulate levels. No rain is expected, making conditions especially oppressive.

Major roadways like I-376, I-79, and Route 28 may see reduced visibility and heavier-than-usual traffic, as commuters adjust to the sweltering, smoky haze. Light southwest winds won’t offer much relief. Pittsburgh International Airport also advises travelers to check for delays as visibility may fluctuate.

This marks one of the season’s first significant heat-and-haze events, setting up a volatile weekend pattern. By Friday afternoon, a 30% chance of thunderstorms returns, intensifying to 90% by Saturday. Flash flooding is not expected, but isolated downpours and thunder are likely.
