Ligonier, Pennsylvania – Mountain roads across southwest Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia could become snow-covered before sunrise Sunday as up to a foot of accumulation buries higher elevations through early Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday until 1 a.m. Tuesday for the higher elevations of Westmoreland, Fayette and Indiana counties in Pennsylvania, along with Preston and Tucker counties in West Virginia. Snow totals between 6 and 12 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible along the ridges. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph, producing blowing snow and reduced visibility.
In the Laurel Highlands, areas near Ligonier, Donegal and Ohiopyle may see steady accumulation through Sunday night, impacting the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Route 30. Farther south, communities including Kingwood, Terra Alta, Davis and Canaan Valley could face slick mountain passes and drifting snow along exposed ridgelines such as U.S. 219 and Route 33.
The heaviest impacts are likely during the Monday morning and evening commutes, when untreated roads may remain snow-covered. Steep terrain will increase the risk of stalled vehicles and secondary crashes.
Residents should avoid unnecessary travel, allow extra time if driving is essential and keep emergency supplies in their vehicles. Conditions are expected to improve after 1 a.m. Tuesday, but additional advisories could follow if snowfall rates intensify.
