Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Drivers across western and northwest Pennsylvania are facing slick and hazardous conditions tonight as snow and pockets of freezing drizzle linger into the Thursday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday for portions of northwest and western Pennsylvania, including Mercer, Venango, Forest, Clarion, Jefferson, and Indiana counties, along with higher elevations of Westmoreland and Fayette counties. Additional snow accumulations of up to two inches are expected in lower elevations, with up to three inches possible in higher terrain. A light glaze of ice may develop where freezing drizzle mixes in.
Communities such as Franklin, Oil City, Grove City, Sharon, Clarion, Punxsutawney, Indiana, Ligonier, and Donegal are likely to see the most persistent impacts overnight. Roads, bridges, and untreated surfaces could become slick quickly, especially during the late evening and early morning hours.
In the Laurel Highlands and nearby ridges, wind gusts up to 45 mph could bring down weakened tree branches, adding to localized travel hazards. PennDOT urges motorists to slow down and allow extra time for the Thursday commute.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after mid-morning Thursday, though drivers should remain alert for lingering icy spots. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m., and additional updates may be issued if conditions worsen overnight.
