Philadelphia, PA – Scorching heat and the threat of flash flooding converge on Philadelphia and nearby counties Tuesday, with public safety officials urging residents to take immediate precautions. Heat index values could soar as high as 103°F, while heavy rain and strong thunderstorms may trigger street flooding and dangerous travel, especially along I-95, I-76, and key city roadways.

According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory are in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 8. Expect temperatures to spike into the low to mid-90s, with high humidity creating oppressive conditions from Center City to Camden, Cherry Hill, and the Delaware River towns. At the same time, bands of heavy rain and thunderstorms could bring 1 to 2 inches of rainfall, with isolated spots—especially poor drainage and urban areas—at risk for flash flooding.

Stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat. Those without air conditioning should seek cooling centers or visit public spaces such as libraries and malls. If flooding occurs, never drive through water-covered roads—even a few inches can sweep a vehicle away. Monitor SEPTA and PATCO for transit delays, and keep an eye on storm drains and low-lying intersections throughout the city.

Storms are likely to linger Tuesday night, with more showers and possible thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday. By the weekend, conditions begin to moderate, offering a mix of sun and passing showers—much more typical for summer in Philadelphia.

Multiple weather advisories remain in effect through Tuesday evening. Stay tuned for additional updates and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
