Pittsburgh, PA – Clearing skies across western Pennsylvania are setting the stage for potentially severe thunderstorms this afternoon, with the National Weather Service warning that all hazards — including damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes — are on the table.
According to the National Weather Service Pittsburgh office, a marginal Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk remains in effect for the region through Sunday evening, including Allegheny, Butler, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. Storms are expected to begin developing by noon, with increasing instability as sunshine breaks through the morning cloud cover.
Areas from Pittsburgh to Wheeling and up through Butler and Mercer are under particular watch, with a 2–5% chance of tornado development through tonight. The NWS cautions that while widespread severe weather is not expected, any storms that form could quickly intensify. Drivers on I-79, I-70, and Route 22 should remain alert for sudden downpours or wind gusts.
Residents should charge mobile devices, secure outdoor items, and stay weather-aware through the evening. If warnings are issued, seek shelter indoors immediately.
Storm threats will taper overnight, but additional alerts remain possible depending on late-afternoon development.
