Pittsburgh, PA – Carnegie Mellon University has launched the Center for New Work Development in Downtown Pittsburgh. The School of Drama partnered with the City Theatre Company, Kelly Strayhorn Theater, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, Pittsburgh Public Theater, Play on Shakespeare, and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust to create a development pipeline for area theatre artists. The center will be located in the Victory Building in downtown Pittsburgh.

The center will support both undergraduate and graduate students as they develop new plays, musicals, and other theatrical works. Bridging the gap between academic support and professional collaboration is a central goal of the Center of New Work Development.

Artists will have access to workspaces while collaborating with the center. Facilities such as the Trust Arts Education Center and the Rauh Rehearsal Hall are now available to participants through CMU’s partnership with area theatre organizations. This ensures students and artists have the resources needed to develop innovative theatrical projects.

The center will officially open in early fall with the start of the new school year. Many in the community are eager to see what the center will bring to Pittsburgh.

“I’m looking forward to it!” said a current School of Drama student. “Theatre is a collaborative art form, and the more opportunities we get to work with other drama students the better.”

The center will share more information in the coming months about  future programming, public performances, and professional development opportunities for local artists and students.
