Pennsylvania Man Targeted in Lawn Mower Explosion; State Police Seek Former Tenant in Attempted Homicide Case

Salem Township, PA – A Salem Township man was nearly killed when an explosive device detonated as he operated a lawn mower outside his home on State Route 22, prompting an attempted homicide investigation by Pennsylvania State Police.

According to PSP Troop A – Kiski Valley, the incident occurred Saturday at 7901 SR 22 in Westmoreland County. Authorities said the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device planted near where the victim was mowing. The suspect, identified as 53-year-old James SEVER, is a former tenant of the property.

An arrest warrant has been issued for SEVER, who faces multiple felony charges including criminal attempt–homicide, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of weapons of mass destruction, and risking a catastrophe. He is also charged with lesser offenses including reckless endangerment, trespassing, and possession of instruments of crime.

Investigators believe SEVER may be in the areas of New Alexandria, Derry Township, West Newton, or Kane. PSP noted that although his vehicle has been seized, SEVER may still be traveling using a dark blue electric bike and could be residing in wooded areas.
