Pittsburgh, Pa. – Rising rivers and saturated ground could lead to flooding across southwestern Pennsylvania starting early Wednesday, as up to 3 inches of rain are expected to fall through the night.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Pittsburgh and State College, a Flood Watch remains in effect from 5 a.m. Wednesday through early Thursday for more than a dozen counties, including Allegheny, Somerset, Bedford, Westmoreland, and Fayette. The alert also extends into parts of northern West Virginia, including Monongalia and Preston counties.

Poor drainage areas, low-lying roads, and urban neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Greensburg, and Uniontown are especially vulnerable. Creeks and streams—already running high from previous rainfall—could rise quickly and overflow their banks. Officials warn that flooding may hit suddenly during heavier downpours, making some roads impassable.

Drivers should avoid flooded roads, and residents in flood-prone areas should have a plan to move to higher ground if needed. If you live near streams or underpasses, secure belongings and prepare for possible water intrusion.

The Flood Watch remains in effect until 5 a.m. Thursday, and more warnings may follow if rain totals climb or storms stall. Check back Wednesday afternoon for localized alerts or flash flood warnings.
