Pasco County, FL – Authorities are urging residents to stay alert as a growing debit card PIN scam continues to target unsuspecting shoppers across the area.
According to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, the warning was issued Tuesday as part of an ongoing effort to educate the public about tactics scammers are reportedly using to access victims’ bank accounts. Officials say suspects allegedly watch individuals enter their PIN at checkout terminals before creating a distraction to steal the physical card.
Investigators say the scam typically unfolds in seconds. After observing a victim input their PIN, a suspect may allegedly approach and ask if the person dropped money or suggest checking their wallet. While the victim is distracted, the suspect reportedly removes the debit card from the reader and quickly leaves the scene, gaining access to both the card and the PIN.
Law enforcement officials stress that these incidents are preventable with heightened awareness. Residents are encouraged to use contactless payment options or credit cards when possible, reducing the need to enter a PIN in public. Authorities also recommend shielding keypads when entering PIN numbers and staying aware of surroundings at all times during transactions.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that individuals who believe they may have been targeted or victimized should immediately contact local law enforcement and their financial institution to limit potential losses.
Officials continue to remind the public that scammers often rely on distraction and urgency, and taking a moment to remain vigilant can help prevent financial harm. Community awareness campaigns like this aim to reduce the number of incidents and keep residents informed about evolving scam tactics.
