Hillsboro, IL – Illinois 185 has partially reopened to traffic nearly three months after a massive sinkhole forced its closure. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that one lane is now open, with traffic being controlled by temporary signals.
According to IDOT, the sinkhole, located southeast of Hillsboro, initially appeared on April 15, prompting an immediate closure of the road between Hillsboro and Coffeen. The sinkhole significantly increased in diameter, making the area unsafe for travel and necessitating a thorough geotechnical evaluation.
Temporary repairs have now made it possible to safely reopen one lane to traffic. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area and to be prepared for delays due to the temporary signals controlling traffic flow. IDOT continues to monitor the site and advises drivers to consider alternate routes when possible.
IDOT has stated that full repairs are ongoing and further work is needed to ensure the long-term stability of the roadway. The agency appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during this time and will provide updates as the situation progresses.
For now, the reopening of one lane is a significant step forward in restoring normal traffic conditions on Illinois 185.
