Portland, OR – A major winter storm is set to bring heavy snowfall and gusty winds to the Oregon and Washington Cascades, with accumulations reaching up to 17 inches in higher elevations. The storm is expected to begin Wednesday evening and continue through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, the first of two winter systems will arrive late Wednesday, producing up to 12 inches of snow in the North and Central Oregon Cascades and up to 11 inches in the South Washington Cascades. Higher elevations above 5,500 feet could see up to 17 inches. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph, leading to hazardous travel conditions.
Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick and dangerous. Drivers are advised to carry emergency kits, including blankets, food, water, and tire chains.
A second winter system is expected to follow closely on Friday, bringing additional snowfall and potential warnings.
