Buckley, WA – A small earthquake measuring magnitude 2.5 was recorded Friday night southeast of Seattle, about 2 kilometers east-southeast of Buckley, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN).

The quake occurred at 11:59 p.m. UTC (4:59 p.m. PDT) at a depth of 17.9 kilometers (11 miles), near the foothills of the Cascade Range and just northwest of Mount Rainier National Park.

Early reports indicate the quake was lightly felt in the Buckley and Enumclaw areas, though no damage or injuries have been reported. A single “Did You Feel It?” response had been logged as of Saturday morning.

While magnitude 2.5 quakes are common across western Washington and rarely cause damage, they serve as reminders of the region’s active tectonic setting along the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

Residents can report whether they felt the shaking via the USGS “Did You Feel It?” survey, which helps scientists better understand local seismic activity.
