Springfield, Missouri – Life-threatening cold is moving into the Ozarks, bringing dangerously low wind chills that could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes late Friday night into Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect across much of southern Missouri and the Ozarks from midnight Friday night through midday Saturday. Wind chills are expected to fall as low as 10 to 15 below zero, with colder pockets possible where snow remains on the ground and winds stay elevated.
The greatest risk stretches across communities including Springfield, Branson, Joplin, Lebanon, Rolla, West Plains, Ava, and Mountain Grove. Outdoor exposure will be especially dangerous during overnight hours and early Saturday, particularly for drivers, first responders, and anyone working outside. Ongoing snow in parts of the region could worsen the threat if vehicles become stranded.
Emergency officials warn that prolonged exposure increases the risk of hypothermia in addition to frostbite. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers with hats, gloves, and face coverings, and bring pets indoors. Livestock should have access to shelter, unfrozen water, and adequate feed.
Cold conditions will linger into Saturday morning before slowly easing later in the day. Additional advisories may be issued if Arctic air holds longer than expected across the Ozarks.
