Springfield, Missouri – Dangerous, oppressive heat is gripping much of southwest Missouri this weekend, with a rare Excessive Heat Warning in effect for Springfield, Joplin, and Branson through Wednesday. Heat index values are expected to soar between 100° and 110° each afternoon, raising serious health concerns for residents across the Ozarks.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, the warning covers a broad swath of Missouri, including Greene, Jasper, Christian, Taney, and Polk counties, and stretches along major routes like I-44 and Highway 65. The greatest risk will be from noon to 7 p.m. daily, when the heat index will peak, increasing the threat of heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and dehydration.

Schools, outdoor workers, and vulnerable populations are urged to take precautions. Stay indoors during peak heat, drink extra water, check on neighbors without air conditioning, and never leave children or pets inside vehicles. Springfield, Joplin, and Branson could see multiple days above 105° on the heat index, with utility providers bracing for increased demand and possible power outages.

This event rivals previous July heatwaves, but officials warn that heat-related illnesses may develop faster than usual due to the prolonged duration. Emergency cooling centers are open in Springfield and Joplin for those needing relief.

The Excessive Heat Warning is set to remain in effect through at least Wednesday evening. Additional advisories or emergency alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
