Overturned Semi in Indiana Leaves 43 Calves Dead, Rescue Efforts Save Dozens

Chesterton, IN – Emergency crews responded Monday afternoon to a semi-truck crash on SR 49 near the Indiana Toll Road. The truck overturned, carrying 202 calves, leaving 43 dead and four euthanized.

According to the Indiana District 1 Large Animal Emergency Rescue team, responders safely rescued the remaining calves. Crews used specialized equipment to extricate and transfer the animals to temporary housing at a local farm.

Joe’s Towing Inc. and Waffco Heavy Duty Towing assisted by securing fencing and offering equipment. Veterinarians and local livestock owners played a critical role in the rescue. The operation involved multiple agencies, including the Chesterton Fire and Police Departments, Lowell Fire Department, and Indiana State Police.

The accident temporarily disrupted traffic as crews worked to upright the trailer and move the livestock. Officials praised the collaborative effort that ensured the calves’ safety.

The incident highlights the risks of transporting livestock and the need for specialized emergency responses.
