Over 10,000 Feel 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake in Nevada, Aftershocks Monday

Yerington, NV – A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck northern Nevada on Monday afternoon, with tremors felt by over 10,000 residents across the region. The quake was centered 25 kilometers north-northeast of Yerington at 3:08 p.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The shallow quake, with a depth of zero kilometers, caused noticeable shaking in surrounding areas. The USGS received over 10,000 “Did You Feel It?” reports from Nevada and nearby states, with many describing the intensity as strong. The quake was rated as “VII” on the ShakeMap, indicating very strong ground motion.

Smaller aftershocks followed, including one measuring 3.6 magnitude, raising concerns about additional seismic activity. Officials report a 14% chance of another 5.0 magnitude or greater quake within the week.

Residents in Yerington and surrounding areas are being advised to inspect buildings for damage and prepare emergency supplies. While no injuries or major structural damage have been reported so far, the region remains on alert.
