Newport, North Carolina – Strong rip currents and scattered thunderstorms will make for a dangerous start to the week along the Crystal Coast, as beachgoers in Newport and surrounding areas face both marine and weather hazards Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Morehead City, a Beach Hazards Statement is in effect from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday for the entire stretch of shoreline from Cape Hatteras to Surf City. Dangerous rip currents are likely, especially during the low tide cycle around 9 a.m., posing a threat even to experienced swimmers.

Meanwhile, inland areas like Newport and Beaufort may see scattered thunderstorms after 2 p.m., with a 30% chance of rain and gusts up to 18 mph. The severe threat is low, but localized downpours and lightning may temporarily impact beach activities and road travel on US-70 and Route 24.

Tuesday and Wednesday look dry and warm, but unsettled weather returns Thursday with increasing rain chances into the weekend.
