Shorewood, IL – An Orland Park woman working as a caregiver was allegedly arrested Monday after a reported theft and bathroom standoff at a Shorewood assisted living facility.
According to a press release from the Shorewood Police Department, officers responded to a call at 1100 North River Road on Monday at 1:40 p.m. after staff alleged the caregiver had stolen items from a 90-year-old resident. The caregiver reportedly confined herself to the facility’s bathroom in an attempt to evade police and dispose of the allegedly stolen property.
Officers located 54-year-old Marlyn C. Villalobos of Orland Park in the women’s bathroom, allegedly attempting to flush jewelry, which belonged to the elderly resident, down the toilet. Police say some of the stolen items were recovered from the bathroom and later identified by the victim and facility staff.
After being transported to the Shorewood Police Department, Villalobos allegedly requested to use the bathroom several times. Officers searched the bathroom before allowing her access, and allege she then tried to flush additional stolen cash down the toilet. Officers reportedly recovered the cash, and the victim confirmed the missing funds, according to police.
Villalobos was allegedly charged with Financial Exploitation of the Elderly, Residential Burglary, Burglary, Theft, and Obstructing a Peace Officer. She was transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility, where she is awaiting a pre-trial release hearing under the Illinois SAFE-T Act.
