Medford, OR – A powerful winter storm is set to blanket the southern Oregon Cascades and surrounding mountain areas with heavy snow, creating hazardous travel conditions through Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 11 p.m. Sunday to 5 p.m. Tuesday. Snow accumulations between 8 and 24 inches are possible across the South Central Oregon Cascades, including areas like Howard Prairie, Diamond Lake, Siskiyou Summit, and Crescent Lake. Gusty winds may reach up to 40 mph.

Travel along Highways 230, 138, 62, and 140 could become treacherous, particularly during the Monday morning and evening commutes. Mount Ashland and surrounding elevations are also expected to see significant snowfall.

Residents in Klamath, Lake, and Modoc counties, including Chemult, Alturas, and Lakeview, should prepare for 3 to 13 inches of snow, especially at higher elevations. Winds in those areas could gust up to 45 mph, further reducing visibility.

Travelers are urged to slow down and exercise caution. For Oregon road conditions, visit tripcheck.com or dial 511. Prepare emergency kits with food, water, and a flashlight in case of road closures or delays.

This weather system aligns with typical late-season snow events, though the expected accumulation is above average for this time of year.
