Pendleton, OR – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Oregon’s Northern Blue Mountains, with heavy snow and freezing rain expected through Sunday. Conditions will primarily affect areas above 4,500 feet, posing risks for travelers and residents.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pendleton, precipitation will intensify tonight, bringing significant snowfall to the Cascades, Wallowas, and Elkhorn Mountains. Snow accumulation could exceed 8 inches in higher elevations. Light freezing rain is also forecast, creating icy conditions on mountain passes and roadways, including I-84 near Cabbage Hill.

Travelers are advised to avoid unnecessary trips or prepare for delays due to hazardous conditions. Drivers should equip vehicles with chains and emergency kits. South winds between 25-35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are expected to compound road dangers in the Grande Ronde Valley.

Weekend temperatures in Pendleton will remain in the 40s, with rain likely through Saturday evening. The storm will subside Sunday, bringing clearer skies and highs near 46 degrees. By Monday, light snow is expected at elevations above 2,700 feet.

Residents in low-lying areas should monitor for minor flooding due to rain accumulation, while those in higher elevations must prepare for potential power outages caused by snow-laden trees.
