Medford, Ore. – Smoke hangs over the Rogue Valley as another hot day begins, muting the sunrise and reminding southern Oregon residents that wildfire season is already affecting daily life. With temperatures climbing toward the upper 90s and even triple digits, air quality and heat are combining into the region’s biggest weather story.

According to the National Weather Service and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until noon Monday for Jackson, Klamath and Lake counties, including Medford, Ashland, Klamath Falls, Lakeview and surrounding communities. Wildfire smoke is expected to fluctuate with changing winds and may reach unhealthy levels at times.

Today’s high reaches 98 degrees with patchy smoke lingering through much of the day. Temperatures climb to 101 degrees Sunday, ease slightly to 98 degrees Monday, then return to 100 degrees Tuesday. Overnight lows only fall into the upper 50s and 60s, offering limited cooling before the next hot afternoon.

Travelers along Interstate 5, Highway 62 and Highway 99 may notice changing visibility where smoke becomes locally thicker. Drivers should allow extra following distance and use headlights whenever visibility decreases. Outdoor workers, hikers and families attending weekend events should schedule strenuous activity during the cooler morning hours and remain hydrated.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality recommends limiting prolonged outdoor activity when smoke increases. Infants, young children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with heart or lung disease face the greatest health risk. Keeping windows closed, running HEPA air filtration when available and avoiding indoor smoke sources can help reduce exposure.

The weather pattern stays largely dry through early next week, allowing heat and smoke to persist. While a slight chance of rain appears by midweek, widespread relief is not expected. Additional air quality advisories remain possible if wildfire activity or wind patterns change.
