Hanford, Calif. – Bright sunshine is already heating pavement across the San Joaquin Valley, and temperatures are climbing fast toward another afternoon of intense summer heat. Anyone with outdoor plans should prepare now, because the hottest part of the day will arrive quickly and remain a daily concern through early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, sunny skies will dominate across Kings County with a high near 98 degrees today after a mild morning. Northwest winds around 5 mph will provide only limited relief as dry air and strong July sunshine drive temperatures upward during the afternoon.

The warming trend continues through Sunday and Monday with highs reaching 99 degrees, while Tuesday also tops out near 99 degrees. By Wednesday, temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees, marking the hottest day of the week. Overnight lows remain warm, generally between 70 and 71 degrees, offering little cooling after sunset.

Drivers along Highway 198, Highway 43, and State Route 41 should check vehicle cooling systems before traveling. The combination of prolonged sunshine and hot pavement can increase the risk of tire problems and vehicle overheating during the afternoon. Keep extra water in the car and avoid leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles for any amount of time.

The National Weather Service indicates that dry weather will continue across the central San Joaquin Valley while monsoonal thunderstorms remain focused well to the east over Arizona and portions of the Desert Southwest. No thunderstorms are expected around Hanford during the next several days, but the persistent heat will become the primary weather story.

If you’re working outdoors, schedule frequent breaks in the shade and stay hydrated. Gardeners should water during the early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation and help plants withstand the prolonged heat.

Long-range outlooks suggest temperatures may remain above seasonal averages into late next week, keeping the San Joaquin Valley firmly in a midsummer weather pattern.
