Oregon – Wind rattles signs and bends tree limbs across the foothills of the Northern Blue Mountains as powerful gusts sweep through eastern Oregon. Loose objects slide, trailers sway, and travel grows tense in exposed areas as winter makes its presence felt early in 2026.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Wind Advisory remains in effect through the morning hours for areas along the base of the Northern Blue Mountains. Sustained south to southeast winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts frequently reaching 55 mph. Along I-84 near Cabbage Hill, peak gusts may briefly approach 60 mph, creating hazardous travel for trucks, RVs, and other high-profile vehicles.

In Pendleton, Pilot Rock, and Athena, patchy rain and fog combine with gusty winds, reducing visibility and making steering difficult on open stretches of road. Drivers are urged to slow down, keep both hands on the wheel, and allow extra distance between vehicles. Unsecured outdoor items may be blown around, posing additional hazards.

As winds ease later today, clouds linger and temperatures settle into the upper 40s. By Monday night, colder air arrives, dropping lows near freezing. This sets the stage for frost and the potential for slick spots where daytime moisture refreezes after dark. Winter conditions gradually expand into the first full week of 2026, with additional rain chances returning by Tuesday and snow levels lowering midweek.

While the strongest winds fade, the pattern stays active. Travelers should remain alert for changing conditions, especially during early mornings and evenings when cold air tightens its grip. Daylight slowly increases through January, but winter weather remains firmly in control for now.
