Medford, Oregon – Thunderstorms could spark across southern Oregon and northern California Monday and Tuesday evenings, with Yreka, Mt. Shasta, and Klamath Falls seeing the highest chances for lightning and gusty winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, upper-level instability and monsoonal moisture are fueling the storm potential starting Monday afternoon, June 30, and continuing through Tuesday evening, July 1. The highest thunderstorm probabilities range from 13–17%, especially near Yreka, Mount Shasta, and Alturas. Medford, Lakeview, and Klamath Falls are also under a 10–16% chance.
These storms could trigger lightning strikes and erratic, gusty winds. Slight chances (5–10%) of nocturnal thunderstorms are also in play overnight both days, posing risks to dry brushlands and fire-prone areas. Rainfall, while possible, is not expected to be significant.
Drivers in affected regions should be prepared for sudden wind shifts and reduced visibility. Lightning safety remains critical—residents are urged to head indoors at the first sign of thunder and avoid elevated or open areas.
Thunderstorm risks may linger into Tuesday night. The National Weather Service will issue updates as conditions develop.
