Eugene, OR – A 25-year-old Eugene man was arrested after allegedly causing a reckless driving incident on Highway 58 that nearly resulted in a head-on collision, authorities said. Deputies are still working to identify the driver of the vehicle that narrowly avoided impact.

According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were assisting Oregon State Troopers with traffic control near milepost 22 around 5:30 p.m. Saturday when a silver Pontiac Coupe allegedly passed a brown Kia minivan in a no-passing zone while heading westbound. An oncoming vehicle had to swerve onto the shoulder to avoid colliding with the Pontiac, which had reportedly accelerated at a high rate of speed. Deputies said the Pontiac sideswiped the Kia before continuing down the highway.

Later that evening, deputies located the driver of the Pontiac, identified as Dunken Deshaun Joshua Thornton, 25, of Eugene. Thornton was arrested on suspicion of failing to perform duties of a driver involving property damage, reckless driving and three counts of reckless endangering, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said they have not yet identified the driver of the oncoming vehicle that was forced off the roadway to avoid a collision. Investigators are asking the person driving that vehicle to contact the Lane County Sheriff’s Office at 541-682-4141 and reference case #25-3999.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains ongoing.
