Portland, OR – A major winter storm is set to bring heavy snow to the Oregon and Washington Cascades, with accumulations reaching up to 2 feet through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, the Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday until 10 a.m. Monday for the North and Central Oregon Cascades, including cities such as Government Camp, Santiam Pass, and Willamette Pass. The South Washington Cascades, including Larch Mountain and Mt. St. Helens, are also under the warning until 10 a.m. Monday.
Snowfall of 1 to 2 feet is expected in the Oregon Cascades, while the Washington Cascades could see up to 20 inches of snow with a tenth of an inch of ice. Roads, bridges, and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous, making travel dangerous.
Drivers are urged to postpone travel if possible. Those who must travel should allow extra time, drive slowly, and take emergency supplies. Carbon monoxide poisoning risks increase if stranded; ensure the car’s exhaust pipe remains clear. Backcountry recreation is strongly discouraged during the storm.
This winter weather event could severely impact travel and outdoor activities throughout the region.
