Omaha, Nebraska – Snow and a developing winter mix could create slick stretches along I-80 and I-29 beginning Sunday morning, with freezing spots likely by early Monday that may impact both metro and rural travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, two rounds of winter weather are expected from Sunday through Monday night. The first wave Sunday morning into Sunday night favors accumulating snow mainly along and south of I-80, especially toward the Kansas and Missouri borders. A second round early Monday may bring a brief wintry mix before transitioning to rain across much of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa.
Across Douglas, Sarpy and Cass counties, even light snow could coat untreated roads and overpasses. Elevated ramps along I-80, I-680 and Highway 370 are most vulnerable to slick conditions during early morning and overnight hours when pavement temperatures hover near freezing.
By Monday afternoon, rain is expected to overspread the region. However, as temperatures dip again Monday night, wet pavement could refreeze in spots. Commuters along US-75, I-29 and Highway 275 should prepare for isolated icy patches after 6 p.m. Monday, particularly on bridges and less-traveled secondary roads.
Motorists should reduce speed, increase following distance and avoid abrupt braking. Check Nebraska 511 and Iowa 511 for updated road conditions before heading out, and consider adjusting travel plans during heavier bursts of precipitation.
The unsettled pattern continues into Monday night, and additional advisories may be issued if snowfall totals or icing potential increase. Residents should stay alert for updated statements as conditions evolve through early next week.
