Omaha, Nebraska – Strong winds combined with scattered snow showers could create brief periods of near-zero visibility and hazardous travel across the Omaha metro and eastern Nebraska today, according to the National Weather Service.

In a Friday morning update, forecasters said snow showers will develop in very narrow, fast-moving bands, meaning some locations may see little to no snow while others experience rapid road coverage within minutes. Overall snowfall accumulations are expected to remain under 1 inch, though localized totals of 2 to 3 inches are possible where heavier bands persist.

The National Weather Service warned that northwest wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph may significantly reduce visibility during active snow showers due to blowing snow, especially on open roads and bridges. These conditions may briefly create whiteout-like situations before improving just as quickly.

Travel impacts are expected during the morning and evening commute, particularly across Omaha, Lincoln, Fremont, Columbus, and surrounding areas, as well as portions of southwest Iowa. Slick spots and sudden visibility drops may develop with little warning.

Behind the snow showers, much colder air will settle into the region this weekend. Wind chills are forecast to drop to between -5° and -20° from Saturday morning through Sunday morning, increasing the risk of frostbite with prolonged exposure.

Drivers are urged to slow down immediately if visibility drops, increase following distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
