Oklahoma, August 15, 2024 – The upcoming weekend is set to bring extreme weather conditions across Oklahoma and parts of Missouri. The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings for much of Oklahoma, including Tulsa, with heat index values expected to reach between 105 and 113 degrees. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak hours, particularly from noon to 9 PM when the heat will be most intense.
The heat will not be the only concern. According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, a weak surface boundary moving southward could trigger severe thunderstorms late in the afternoon and evening. These storms may bring damaging winds of 60-70 miles per hour, posing additional hazards. The highest risk for severe weather is expected in northeastern Oklahoma, including areas around Bartlesville and Miami.
Missouri will also experience significant heat, particularly in the southern regions. A heat advisory is in effect from noon to 9 PM, with heat index values ranging from 100 to 105 degrees. Residents in southern Missouri, including areas around Springfield and Joplin, should take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Central Missouri, however, will remain relatively cooler, with temperatures expected to stay below the advisory thresholds.
As the weekend progresses, the heat will persist in both states, with Oklahoma seeing temperatures close to 100 degrees through Sunday. Missouri will experience slightly lower temperatures, with some relief expected in the central regions.
