Oklahoma residents should brace for an intense heat wave this week, with temperatures set to soar well above average. The National Weather Service in Tulsa has issued a heat advisory, indicating that the heat will continue to build across the region.

Starting today, temperatures will climb to a high of 96°F, with the heat intensifying throughout the weekend. Friday and Saturday will see temperatures reach a scorching 97°F, while Sunday promises to be even hotter at 99°F. The heat wave will peak early next week, with Monday and Tuesday forecasted to hit 101°F and 100°F, respectively.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index suggests moderate to high risk, recommending frequent breaks for those working or exercising outdoors. With such high temperatures, it’s crucial to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

As the heat wave progresses, the risk for heat exhaustion and heatstroke increases, especially among vulnerable populations. Ensure that pets have access to shade and plenty of water, and check on neighbors who may be at risk.

By Thursday, a slight relief may come with a 45% chance of showers, bringing temperatures down to 88°F. However, the heat will return on Friday with a high of 89°F. Stay updated with local weather reports and take necessary steps to stay safe during this extreme weather event.
