Alva, Oklahoma – Drivers in northwest Oklahoma face water-covered rural roads right now as heavy overnight thunderstorms dump up to 2 inches of rain across Woods County, triggering flooding concerns through 5 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, a Flood Advisory remains in effect for Woods County after Doppler radar estimated between 1 and 2 inches of rainfall by 1:46 a.m., with an additional half inch possible before the rain tapers off. The advisory covers mainly rural areas of north central Woods County.

Low-water crossings, farm-to-market roads and poor drainage areas are the primary concern early Wednesday morning. Water may cover stretches of pavement that appear shallow but can quickly stall vehicles. Emergency officials warn that most flood-related deaths occur in cars.

Residents near creeks and drainage ditches should monitor rising water levels over the next several hours. Reduced visibility at night increases the danger, especially on unlit county roads north and east of Alva.

Motorists are urged to avoid non-essential travel until after 5 a.m. If you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around immediately. Additional advisories could be issued if rainfall rates intensify before daybreak.
