Muskogee, Okla. – Residents across eastern Oklahoma should prepare for fast-developing severe weather this afternoon as a tornado watch blankets 18 counties until 7 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 154 includes Adair, Cherokee, Muskogee, McCurtain, Pittsburg, and Ottawa counties, among others. The watch, issued at noon CDT, means conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms across the region through the evening hours.

Cities such as Muskogee, Tahlequah, McAlester, and Poteau are within the alert zone. Residents in these areas should monitor weather alerts closely, have shelter plans ready, and charge phones and backup power sources. Winds over 60 mph and hail larger than quarters are possible in some storms.

Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas, especially along U.S. Highways 69, 59, and 271. Local schools and businesses may also adjust plans depending on how the storms evolve through the day.

The tornado watch remains in effect until 7 p.m., but additional watches or warnings could follow as storms move east. Stay tuned to local alerts and NOAA Weather Radio for updates.
