McAlester, Okla. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to impact parts of southeast Oklahoma through 10 a.m. Wednesday, prompting a severe thunderstorm watch across four counties, including McAlester, Hugo, and Wilburton.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 196 has been extended for Pittsburg, Latimer, Choctaw, and Pushmataha counties until 10 a.m. CDT. The storms may bring damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, frequent lightning, and quarter-size hail.

In McAlester and surrounding areas in Pittsburg County, early morning commuters should use caution as intense downpours and low visibility may develop along U.S. Highway 69. Wilburton in Latimer County and Clayton in Pushmataha County are also in the active zone, with the potential for rapid storm movement and localized flooding on rural roads.

Residents are advised to stay indoors if possible and secure outdoor items. Keep cell phones charged in case of power outages, and monitor local media or NOAA Weather Radio for updates.

This watch remains in effect until 10 a.m., and additional warnings may follow if conditions worsen.
