Hugo, Okla. – Heavy rain and rising runoff could trigger flash flooding across parts of southeast Oklahoma today, with a Flood Watch in effect for Choctaw and Pushmataha counties until late Tuesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, showers and thunderstorms will spread across the region beginning around 7 a.m., with rainfall totals of one to two inches likely. Isolated areas could see even higher amounts, increasing the risk for flooding in low-lying areas, creeks, and small streams.

Communities such as Hugo, Antlers, and Clayton may experience rapid water rise on rural roads and drainage ditches, particularly during heavier downpours this afternoon. Local officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways and monitor conditions closely. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the key message for travelers.

This is the first significant flooding threat of the month, and emergency managers are urging residents to secure belongings and be prepared to move to higher ground if needed. Cell phones should be fully charged, and weather alerts enabled.

Flooding threats may continue into early Wednesday depending on rainfall rates and storm development. Stay tuned for updated advisories from NWS Tulsa.
