Cleveland, OH – Northern Ohio residents are preparing for hazardous travel conditions as a winter storm threatens heavy snow and strong winds along the I-90 corridor starting today. Up to 12 inches of snow are expected by late Thursday night, with gusts reaching 45 mph.
According to the National Weather Service, the Winter Storm Watch begins this afternoon and includes Cuyahoga, Lake, and Ashtabula counties. The heaviest snow bands are expected tonight into Thursday morning, coinciding with peak travel hours. Drivers should avoid non-essential travel or equip vehicles with emergency supplies such as blankets, water, and flashlights.
Conditions will worsen quickly as an Arctic front crosses the region, leading to whiteout conditions and near-zero visibility. Areas near Lake Erie could see particularly intense snowfall due to lake-effect bands. Winds may also cause tree branches to fall and power outages in localized areas.
The five-day forecast shows continued cold temperatures into the weekend. Highs on Thursday will hover around 25°F, with wind chills dropping into the single digits. Light snow showers may persist Friday before clearer skies arrive Saturday.
Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts and prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Emergency officials recommend delaying travel, checking vehicle safety, and ensuring adequate heating resources at home. For real-time updates, consult the Ohio Department of Transportation or the National Weather Service website.
