Western New York – Another powerful lake-effect snowstorm is set to hit Western New York, with totals reaching up to 20 inches by Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning for Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Wyoming, and Southern Erie counties, effective from 7 p.m. Wednesday through 4 a.m. Saturday. Areas like the Chautauqua Ridge and Boston Hills are expected to see the heaviest accumulations. Winds gusting up to 50 mph will cause significant blowing and drifting snow, creating dangerous travel conditions.
The storm adds to what has already been an extraordinary snowfall season. Some areas of New York have seen more than 60 inches of snow so far, as lake-effect systems continue to dominate the weather. The unique combination of cold air and moisture from Lake Erie has made the region one of the snowiest in the country this year.
Hazardous conditions are expected to peak during Thursday’s commutes, with reduced visibility and slick roads making travel treacherous. Officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel, preparing for possible power outages, and staying informed through local updates.
While snow bands will begin to weaken by Saturday, icy conditions will likely persist on roadways through the weekend. Residents are urged to clear snow from driveways and roofs as accumulations continue to build.
This winter’s relentless lake-effect snow showcases the region’s resilience in dealing with harsh weather, but officials emphasize caution as conditions can change rapidly. Submit snow reports via social media or the NWS website to assist with real-time tracking.
