Parkersburg, West Virginia – Drivers across the Ohio-West Virginia border region should avoid flooded roadways as a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect, with heavy rainfall capable of producing rapid rises on creeks, streams and low-water crossings.
According to the National Weather Service, repeated rounds of heavy rain are causing dangerous runoff across portions of southeast Ohio and western West Virginia. Urban areas, small streams and flood-prone locations are especially vulnerable, and flooding can develop quickly where the heaviest downpours persist.
Communities near Parkersburg, Marietta, Belpre, Athens and surrounding areas should expect rapidly changing conditions through the warning period. Water may cover secondary roads, underpasses and other low-lying locations with little warning, while smaller creeks and drainage channels can rise out of their banks in a matter of minutes.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain. Never drive through flooded roadways, as just a small amount of moving water can sweep away a vehicle. Those living near streams or in flood-prone areas should be prepared to move to higher ground if water begins rising or if additional warnings are issued.
The National Weather Service advises residents to continue monitoring weather alerts as additional thunderstorms could prolong the flooding threat. Flash Flood Warnings may be expanded or extended if heavy rain continues over the affected area.
