Ohio – Bitter cold grips the state early this morning, with dangerous wind chills and subzero temperatures creating life-threatening conditions across central and southern Ohio. In Columbus, the cold is sharp enough to burn exposed skin within minutes, forcing residents indoors as winter tightens its grip.
According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until noon, with a Cold Weather Advisory continuing through Wednesday midday. Wind chills as low as 20 below zero are expected at times, especially before sunrise, while actual air temperatures hover near or below zero.
Columbus reported -1°F early this morning, with wind chills near -17°F, making even short trips outdoors hazardous. Similar conditions extend across much of central Ohio, including Wilmington and surrounding counties. A brief chance for snow showers or blowing snow is noted today, but accumulation appears limited based on current guidance.
Travel impacts remain possible, especially during the morning hours, as extreme cold reduces visibility in any passing snow showers and increases the risk of vehicle issues. Officials urge drivers to keep emergency kits in vehicles and avoid unnecessary travel until temperatures moderate.
Daytime highs struggle to reach the teens today and Wednesday, with overnight lows remaining below zero in spots. While sunshine returns later this week, temperatures stay well below normal, prolonging stress on vulnerable populations, pets, and infrastructure.
Residents are advised to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, and check on elderly neighbors. Warnings and advisories remain active, and additional updates may be issued as the cold pattern persists into midweek.
