Jackson, OH – A flash flood warning has been issued for several southeastern Ohio counties, including Athens, Gallia, Jackson, Meigs, Vinton, and Washington, until 5:30 a.m. Sunday due to heavy rainfall overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, WV, Doppler radar detected between 1 and 2 inches of rain by 2:19 a.m., with an additional 0.5 to 1 inch expected. The rainfall could cause flash flooding in small creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, and low-lying spots.
Communities at risk include Jackson, Wellston, Pomeroy, Albany, and Rutland, as well as Forked Run State Park and surrounding areas. Drivers are advised to avoid flooded roads, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. Nighttime flooding poses added dangers due to reduced visibility.
Residents should remain cautious and report flooding to the National Weather Service at 800-401-9535 when safe. Preparedness measures, such as moving to higher ground and avoiding travel through flood-prone areas, are recommended until conditions improve.
