Columbus, OH – Heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms are expected across much of Ohio on Wednesday, raising concerns for localized flash flooding and damaging wind gusts during the afternoon and evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms will move across the state throughout Wednesday, May 27. Forecasters said some areas could receive 3 inches of rain or more, especially where storms repeatedly track over the same locations.
The greatest threat for stronger storms is expected between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., when conditions may become favorable for storms capable of producing damaging winds. Portions of southern and central Ohio, including Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, Wilmington, Chillicothe, and Lancaster, are under a Level 1 marginal severe weather risk.
Meteorologists warned that saturated ground from previous rainfall will allow creeks, streams, and low-lying areas to respond quickly to additional heavy downpours. Minor flooding, ponding on roads, and isolated flash flooding are all possible through tonight.
Drivers during the evening commute may encounter rapidly changing conditions, including heavy rain, reduced visibility, and water-covered roads. Officials urge motorists to avoid flooded roadways and remain alert for weather warnings throughout the day.
The unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue into tonight before gradually easing later Thursday.
