Youngstown, Ohio – Drivers along the Ohio-Pennsylvania border are navigating near-zero visibility early Monday as dense fog drops sightlines to one quarter mile or less, creating dangerous travel conditions on major interstates.

According to the National Weather Service, Dense Fog Advisories remain in effect until 11 a.m. EST for northeast Ohio, including Youngstown, Warren and Ashtabula, and across western Pennsylvania, including Mercer, Beaver and the Pittsburgh metro area. Visibility may fall below a quarter mile at times, especially in low-lying areas and near rivers.

ODOT crews report rapidly changing visibility along I-80, I-76 and I-680 in Mahoning and Trumbull counties. PennDOT is monitoring I-79 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, where patchy freezing fog could leave a light glaze on bridges and overpasses as temperatures hover near freezing.

Motorists should reduce speed immediately in fog banks, use low-beam headlights and increase following distance. Elevated roadways may become slick first if surface temperatures dip to 32 degrees.

Conditions are expected to improve gradually by late morning as fog lifts, but pockets of low visibility could linger past 11 a.m. Additional advisories may be issued if visibility fails to rebound.
