Cleveland, OH – A period of black ice is expected early Saturday across eastern Ohio and western and central Pennsylvania, with the greatest impacts along Interstate 80, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and U.S. Route 30, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say light snow showers Friday evening left behind enough moisture to freeze as temperatures fall into the teens and 20s overnight. The result may be patchy but hazardous areas of black ice, especially before sunrise.

The highest risk is expected between 5 and 10 a.m. Saturday, when temperatures will be coldest and travel volume begins to increase.

Major highways at risk

The most significant icing concerns are along:

  • Interstate 80, from the Youngstown, Ohio, area through Mercer, Clarion and Clearfield counties in Pennsylvania.
  • Interstate 76/Pennsylvania Turnpike, from the Ohio state line east through Beaver, Allegheny, Westmoreland and Somerset counties.
  • U.S. Route 30, including portions of eastern Ohio and western and central Pennsylvania such as Lisbon, East Liverpool, Greensburg and Bedford.

Forecasters said bridges, overpasses and entrance and exit ramps will freeze first, and roads that appear merely wet may be icy.

Population centers affected

Higher travel impacts are possible in and around:

  • Youngstown and Warren, Ohio
  • Beaver County and the Cranberry Township corridor
  • The Pittsburgh metropolitan area, including the I-76, I-376 and I-279 corridors
  • Greensburg, Latrobe and surrounding communities
  • Indiana, Pennsylvania, and nearby routes including U.S. 422
  • Somerset and Bedford along the Turnpike and U.S. 30

Road conditions may vary significantly across short distances, forecasters said.

Travel guidance

Transportation officials urge drivers to reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance and use caution on untreated roads.
Ohio and Pennsylvania DOTs recommend checking updated road conditions at OHGO.com and 511PA.com.

Conditions are expected to improve by late morning as temperatures slowly rise and road treatments become more effective.
