Youngstown, Ohio – Communities along the Ohio–Pennsylvania border could see increasing winter travel issues as a late-January weather pattern favors accumulating snow across the region.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, areas near the Ohio–Pennsylvania line are included in a slight risk for heavy snow from Saturday through the following Friday, pointing to a higher likelihood of one or more organized winter systems. The risk includes eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania, where colder air is expected to remain in place.

In northeastern Ohio, including Youngstown and surrounding Mahoning County, below-normal temperatures favor snow as the primary precipitation type. That could create slick stretches along Interstate 80, Interstate 680, and Route 11 during periods of steadier snowfall.

Across the border in western Pennsylvania, communities such as Sharon and New Castle may also see accumulating snow, with impacts spreading across local roads and U.S. Route 422. Snowfall occurring over multiple days could lead to cumulative effects on travel and daily operations.

Ohio Department of Transportation and PennDOT officials urge residents to stay alert for changing road conditions, limit non-essential travel during snow, and keep winter emergency kits in vehicles. With colder air likely to persist, any snow that falls may linger between systems.

More specific timing details and potential winter weather advisories are expected as the late-January window approaches, with confidence increasing by early next week.
