Cincinnati, OH – A widespread freeze warning has been issued across parts of Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana as unseasonably cold temperatures are expected early Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 11 a.m. EDT Tuesday. Temperatures are forecast to fall into the lower to mid-20s across much of the region, including cities such as Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, Lexington, and Indianapolis.
The affected area includes central, south central, southwest, and west central Ohio; northeast and northern Kentucky; and portions of east central and southeast Indiana. Officials warn that frost and freeze conditions could damage or destroy crops and other sensitive vegetation if not properly protected.
Residents are urged to cover or bring indoors any tender plants Monday evening. Agricultural producers should take preventive measures to safeguard early spring plantings.
This type of freeze, while not unheard of in early April, poses a significant threat due to the early budding and planting seen in recent weeks. Historically, April freezes can result in localized agricultural losses if not mitigated.
The freeze warning replaces an earlier freeze watch and marks the first significant cold snap of April for the tri-state area.
