Columbus, OH – Officials across Ohio are urging residents to begin preparing today for potential ice storms this winter, warning that freezing rain can cause significantly more damage than snowfall. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), ice accumulation can quickly snap tree limbs, damage powerlines, and disrupt travel on major routes across Central, Northern, and Eastern Ohio.

According to NOAA, even minor ice buildup can overload weakened branches and create dangerous road conditions, especially along I-70, I-71, I-75, and I-77. With fluctuating temperatures expected throughout the week, state emergency managers say today is the ideal time for residents to complete key winter preparation steps.

According to the National Weather Service, homeowners should begin by trimming weak or damaged branches around their property. These limbs are often the first to fall once ice begins to accumulate. NOAA also warns drivers not to raise their windshield wipers before storms, as wipers can freeze to the glass and snap; keeping them lowered and covered is the recommended practice.

Residents are encouraged to stock at least a week’s worth of non-perishable food, bottled water, and essential prescriptions. Ice storms can lead to prolonged power outages and hazardous travel conditions across both cities and rural communities. Officials also advise residents not to park vehicles beneath trees, where ice-coated branches may fall unexpectedly.

To prepare for potential outages, emergency managers recommend fully charging phones, flashlights, power banks, and other essential electronics today. Homeowners with generators should safely store extra gasoline and perform a test run to ensure equipment is working properly. Stocking up on rock salt or ice melt can also help reduce slip hazards around entrances and walkways.

“Ice storms can disrupt daily life across Ohio for days,” the NWS said. “Preparing today is the best protection heading into winter.”
